The Pure Camping Experience

Connecticut Rivers Council's only designated "Wilderness Camp", the Frederick Sprague Barbour Scout Reservation, sits on 106 forested acres in Norfolk, CT. By design, you will not find cabins or drive-in campsites, but you will have the opportunity to camp as past generations of scouts have; by backpacking in what you need, pitching a tent, and cooking over an open fire or trail stove.

Water is available year round and there are latrines on site. Each established camping area is equipped with a stone fire ring large enough for troop cooking. A patrol needing its own fire can build a fire mound (preferred method) but must return the site to its previous condition before departure.

There is no better place for a troop to hone their Leave No Trace skills than Camp Barbour! Camp Barbour is also the perfect place for certain Cubbing events too, such as day hikes, Crossover programs, or checking out the wildlife from our viewing blind!

FACILITIES

WATER
Water is available year-round and is routinely tested for clarity and potability

LATRINE
Each of the 3 main campsites has a latrine.

3 WILDERNESS CAMPING AREAS and ANOTHER CAMPING AREA CLOSE TO THE PARKING AREA
Camping areas are designed to allow patrols to establish separate areas while the adult leadership can still monitor the activities

DEDICATED LEAVE NO TRACE CAMPING AREA
A base camp off the BLUE Trail allows the adult leadership and any younger/inexperienced scouts to experience wilderness camping while allowing older/experienced scouts to venture out into the woods to practice LNT

4 HIKING TRAILS
The RED (main), WHITE, and BLUE Trails offer short but fun walks in the woods. The new YELLOW trail leads to the viewing blind and then goes up the hill to connect with the white trail.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
Units with mountain biking programs are welcome to use the trails, but please talk to the Campmaster regarding safety requirements

COUNCIL FIRE RING
Located just off the rear of the parking area, this is a great place to hold an outdoor Pack Meeting or Court of Honor.

WINTER CAMPING FUN

The RED Trail is great for sliding
A great way to explore Barbour is by cross-country skis or snowshoes. This is the cold spot of Connecticut for wilderness leave-no-trace camping. Recent improvements have added three latrines closer to the campsites.

A new Cub camping site allows for first-time Cub tailgate camping.
